A Day in the Life of an Agawam Camper

Every day at Agawam is unique, but regular structure and timelines ensure familiarity and consistency. Even though the specifics may change, most days follow the same general schedule. Sunday mornings have a more relaxed pace. Sundays begin with our non-denominational vespers service and are followed by weekly awards, where campers are celebrated for their efforts and achievement.

The Morning

7:30 AM

Reveille and Morning Dip

Campers rise at the bugle, dress, and get ready for breakfast. Boys can enjoy a traditional morning dip in Crescent Lake.

8:00 AM

Flag Raising and Morning Announcements

Many details of the morning program are announced here after we honor our flag.

8:15 AM

Breakfast

Groups of 5–7 campers of various ages, and 2 staff members are assigned to a dining room table for a week. Breakfast always includes hot or cold cereal, fruit, yogurt, and a hot meal.

8:45 AM

Cabin Clean-up and Camp Improvement

Campers have beds to make and personal areas to clean, as well as shared common jobs. Cabins are inspected later in the morning in the weekly race for the cleanest cabin.

9:30 AM

Cabin Assigned Activity Period

By assigning a camper and his cabin-mates to most of the camp activities, each boy has some exposure to all that Agawam has to offer.

10:20 AM

Specialty Activity Period

Before the summer begins, campers select four favorite activities to concentrate on over the course of the summer. They are scheduled into activity groups which are age and skill-appropriate.

11:30 AM

General Swim

Optional time to go to the waterfront to cool off, swim laps, or play water games. This time can also be used as free time.

The Afternoon

12:10 PM

Relaxation

Campers and staff report to their cabin areas to relax and wash up for lunch.

12:30 PM

Lunch

Lunch typically features a salad bar as well as choices such as steak and cheese sandwiches or General Tso’s chicken with rice and broccoli. For all meals, food is served family style, and campers share in the serving and clean-up responsibilities.

1:20 PM

Rest Hour

Quiet time in the cabins — a great opportunity to read or write letters home or to friends. Campers are required to send at least one letter and one postcard home each week.

2:30 PM

1st Optional Activity Period

Optional periods encourage time-management and decision-making skills. Campers must attend activities, but may choose their afternoon program, allowing the best use of time to achieve personal goals.

3:30 PM

2nd Optional Activity Period

A wide variety of activities, inter-camp games, and special camp events are scheduled in the afternoons. On typical days, campers may choose to try something new or to stick with an activity long term to work toward their goals.

4:30 PM

General Swim

Another time for campers to head to the waterfront or enjoy some downtime.

The Evening

5:45 PM

Dinner

As at lunch, salad bar is always an option. Common dinners may be a taco salad or grilled chicken with green beans and potatoes. For all meals, there are always options for campers who are vegetarian, gluten free, or have allergies.

7:00 PM

Evening Activities

There are no formal teaching periods after dinner, and most evenings are free. Activities may include supervised boating and fishing, frisbee games, recreational sports leagues, tennis, informal guitar playing and singing, or simply relaxing, reading, and spending time with friends. One or two evenings a week, there is a large group activity, such as all-camp games and our traditional Saturday night Council Fire.

8:30 PM

Bed Bell

Campers get ready for bed. Cabin members enjoy each others’ company as counselors lead discussions, tell stories, or read books.

9:00 PM

Taps

The traditional bugle call, signaling “day is done” and “all is well.” Senior campers have later bedtime privileges.
